PURPOSE OF THE JOB:
To install, maintain and repair refractories in Plant.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS:
- Grade 12/STD 10/ NQF Level4 certificate is essential
- Recognised relevant Trade qualification (Section 13 or Section 26D) with proof of training) is essential
OR
- Proof of recognised completed apprenticeship contract (completed by means of effluxion of time)
- NTC 2 (relevant Trade Theory and specialised courses) is essential
- 5 years’ working experience in a refractory environment is essential
- An experience of working in a Platinum Smelter environment is essential.
- Knowledge of basic health and safety principles in and around a workplace is essential
- Understanding of the refractory materials, products and processes is essential
- Driver's license and own transport is essential
- Valid Medical Certificate is essential or be medically fit to obtain such a certificate
COMPETENCIES:
- Ability to perform basic first aid is essential
- Ability to handle and care for materials is essential
- Skills of refractory bricks, castable and mortars are essential
- Planning and organising skills is essential
- Safety and environmental skills are essential
- Supervisory skills are essential
- Knowledge of Platinum furnaces, Dryers and converters is essential
KEY PERFORMANCE AREAS:
- Organise and control refractories activities
- Set out and prepare construction refractory in work areas
- Prepare ladles, launders, convertors, furnaces, etc. by removing old bricks and material and install new bricks
- Ensure correct mixture of refractory mortals according to requirements
- Install and maintain castable/mouldable refractory materials and refractory brickwork
- Pack refractory bricks to complete refractory linings
- Install gunite materials for refractory linings and ceramic fibre materials
- Cast and maintain Matte launders and ladles and spoons
- Rebuild Matte blocks and maintain slag launders
- Maintain refractories in dryers and converters and conduct emergency refractory work in the furnaces and tapping areas
